Mumbai: In a significant push towards transforming Mumbai into a slum-free city, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced the launch of the тАЬHindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Urban Public Welfare Campaign.тАЭ The initiative aims to accelerate slum redevelopment while leveraging advanced technology to curb the formation of new slums.

The campaign has been introduced as a tribute to Balasaheb Thackeray during his birth centenary year, reflecting the governmentтАЩs commitment to improving living conditions for thousands of residents.

Focus on Cluster Redevelopment

The initiative will prioritize large slum clusters spanning over 50 acres with more than 51% slum coverage. The redevelopment will be carried out under the Slum Cluster Redevelopment Scheme through agencies such as the Slum Rehabilitation Authority, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, and MHADA.

A biometric survey of residents will be conducted to ensure transparency and proper allocation of housing benefits.

Larger Homes for Beneficiaries

Under the revised policy, eligible beneficiaries will receive 300 sq. ft. housing unitsтАФan upgrade from earlier sizes of 180, 225, and 269 sq. ft. Existing projects will also be upgraded accordingly, ensuring better living standards.

Use of тАШNetramтАЩ Technology

To prevent the emergence of new slums, the government will deploy тАЬNetramтАЭ technology, which uses satellite imagery, GIS systems, and digital monitoring tools. High-resolution satellite images will be reviewed every four months to detect and act against unauthorized constructions promptly.

Additionally, a dedicated digital portal developed by BISAG-N will provide accurate slum data to relevant authorities for effective planning and enforcement.

Revised Maintenance Charges

With the construction of taller residential buildings, the government has proposed a revised maintenance fee structure:

  • тВ╣1 lakh for buildings up to 70 meters
  • тВ╣2 lakh for buildings between 70тАУ120 meters
  • тВ╣3 lakh for buildings above 120 meters

Necessary amendments to the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) 2034 have already been initiated to implement these changes.
