ЁЯПе Major Upgrade for Mumbai Hospitals: BMC to Introduce Digital Bed Tracker, Better Hygiene Facilities by Year-End

Mumbai: In a major push to strengthen public healthcare, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a comprehensive plan to upgrade civic-run hospitals across the city by the end of this year.

The initiative aims to improve patient care, enhance hygiene standards, and introduce technology-driven solutions to streamline hospital servicesтАФparticularly benefiting patients from economically weaker sections.

Focus on Hygiene and Patient Support

One of the key highlights of the plan is the introduction of dedicated toilet and bathing facilities for patientsтАЩ relatives across 16 peripheral and four major hospitals. This step is expected to significantly reduce infection risks caused by shared sanitation areas. The first such facility is already under construction at Shatabdi Hospital.

Digital Bed Tracking System

To address one of the most critical challenges faced by patientsтАФfinding available bedsтАФthe BMC is developing a centralized digital dashboard. This system will provide real-time information on bed availability across maternity homes, peripheral hospitals, and major institutions, enabling faster access during emergencies.

Pipeline Gas Expansion

Taking lessons from global crises, the civic body also plans to expand pipeline gas systems to all peripheral hospitals. While major hospitals already have this infrastructure, new installations will be incorporated into ongoing construction projects to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply.

Addressing Existing Challenges

The move comes amid concerns over gaps in MumbaiтАЩs public healthcare system, including:

  • Shortage of doctors and staff
  • Poor sanitation and infrastructure
  • Limited diagnostic services such as MRI and CT scans
  • Inadequate ICU capacity
  • Frequent equipment breakdowns

State minister Uday Samant has assured that a detailed roadmap will be prepared to tackle these issues and improve overall healthcare delivery.

Planned Medical Upgrades

As part of the upgrade:

  • New MRI machines will be installed in hospitals like Nair Hospital
  • ICU facilities will be strengthened in smaller hospitals
  • Medical equipment procured during the COVID-19 pandemic will be reused
  • Efforts will be made to address staffing shortages

Major institutions such as King Edward Memorial Hospital, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, and Cooper Hospital will continue to provide advanced care, while improved peripheral centres are expected to ease the burden on these facilities.

Looking Ahead

The BMCтАЩs initiative marks a significant step toward patient-centric and technology-driven healthcare in Mumbai. If implemented effectively, the reforms could transform the cityтАЩs public health system and ensure better, faster, and more accessible treatment for millions.

A much-needed overhaul of MumbaiтАЩs civic hospitals is underwayтАФpromising improved facilities, smarter systems, and better care for all.
