The Lok Sabha witnessed a heated confrontation on Wednesday as Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi clashed during a discussion on electoral reforms, leading to a political storm and a dramatic Opposition walkout.

The debate—centered on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls—quickly escalated, prompting sharp reactions from both treasury and Opposition benches.

Opposition: ‘Scripted speech’, ‘WhatsApp University lines’

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi was among the first to question Amit Shah’s speech, accusing him of merely reading a “prepared script” without addressing concerns raised over two days by Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Supriya Sule, and Kalyan Banerjee.

“We expected real answers. Instead, he just read out a script,” Gogoi said, alleging that the Home Minister ignored repeated complaints about alleged ‘vote theft’ and irregularities in voter lists.

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate went further, saying Shah seemed to be “reading passages from WhatsApp University”.

She challenged the government’s focus on “infiltrators”, asking:

“If SIR was done in Bihar, how many infiltrators were actually caught? If infiltrators exist, this is your failure. You should resign.”

Shrinate also cited comparative figures:

  • UPA government (2004–14): 88,000 infiltrators removed
  • NDA government (last 11 years): only 2,400 removed

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra added that “someone who is blameless does not need to give such a lengthy explanation”.

Rahul Gandhi Challenges Shah, Then Leads Walkout

The face-off escalated when Rahul Gandhi challenged Amit Shah to a direct debate on his ‘vote theft’ allegations. As Shah continued defending the SIR process, the Opposition staged a coordinated walkout—triggering uproar from the treasury benches.

BJP Hits Back: ‘Shameful’, ‘No patience to listen’

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya accused the Opposition of abandoning the House exactly when the Home Minister was responding point-by-point.

He said:

“Utterly shameful. They demanded a debate for days. But when the Home Minister finally answered their questions, they walked out.”

Surya further accused the Opposition of spreading “lies” about SIR and EVMs, claiming they lacked “basic patience and courtesy”.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Shah for “exposing Opposition propaganda”, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Shah’s speech “outstanding” and fact-heavy.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal defended the SIR exercise as essential to creating a “transparent and clean voter list”, and linked the Opposition’s walkout to a lack of public support.

What Triggered the Clash?

The confrontation stemmed from:

  • Opposition allegations of voter list manipulation
  • Accusations of large-scale ‘vote theft’
  • BJP’s push for SIR to remove undocumented migrants from electoral rolls
  • Claims of political motives behind the verification exercise

The two sides remain sharply divided on the intent and execution of electoral reforms.

The Road Ahead

With Parliament repeatedly disrupted over the issue and SIR becoming a flashpoint, the showdown signals deeper conflict over electoral processes ahead of upcoming state and national elections.

For now, both sides are holding firm:

  • Opposition demands transparency and accountability
  • Government insists reforms are essential to protect the integrity of democracy

The nation watches closely as the debate over electoral reforms enters a critical phase.
